The Mall in Pilot Bay is closed today with the Celebrity Solstice in port today.

Tauranga City Council announced earlier this year that cruise ship visits to the Mount will now be treated the same as major sporting events, meaning a number of roads along Salisbury Avenue and The Mall will be closed.

The closures are to reduce congestion and enable passengers to safely disembark, during the visits of a number of particularly large passenger ships visiting over the summer peak.

The corner of Salisbury Ave and The Mall from Victoria Road on Salisbury Ave to Prince Ave on The Mall, will be clear of traffic at set times.

Traffic coming down Salisbury Ave will be diverted into Victoria Road and Prince Ave to The Mall. Residents within the diverted area will not be excluded from entering or exiting their properties, nor will service vehicles or emergency services.

The roads are expected to re-open around 10.30am.

Today, the above roads are closed as the Celebrity Solstice is in port.

The ship has a gross tonnage of 12187, carries 2746 passengers and 1250 crew members.

The Celebrity Solstice arrived in Tauranga after coming from Wellington this morning.

...dozens of lost parking spaces and no boat launching for locals! Is it really necessary to shut off the entire Mall just to allow access for a few buses to ferry these people to Rotorua/Matamata?

congestion?

So, by reducing congestion, you mean keeping the rate payers away but allowing buses and cars to take the passengers to Hobbit town, Rotorua, or anywhere else as long as it stops tourists spending locally. Geeze this TCC are a bunch of morons.

Just a guess

Just a guess, but Im assuming the road closure is to protect TBOP monopoly on booking tours. This way other tour operators are kept away.
