Tauranga floods as rain band hits

Heavy rain is expected to be short lived in Tauranga today.

Surface flooding is being reported around Tauranga as a heavy rain band passes over the city.

Flooding has been reported on Takitimu Drive and on Devonport Road, by the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre.

MetService meteorologist Tom Adams says locals can expect the worst to be over soon.

'A rain band over Tauranga has seen 5mm of rainfall within ten minutes.

'That should be over within the next hour, it is peaking at the moment but it is moving across to the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

'We still have a rain warning out for the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Our warning for this area continues until 2pm today.”

The rain has been seen by many other areas across the North Island, says Tom.

'We've had hourly rain rates reported at 33mm in Taranaki, 26mm in Tararua and even Wainuiomata saw 20mm of rainfall an hour which is quite a populated area.

'Places across the North and South Island have seen rainfall rates above 20mm an hour.

'In the Eastern Bay, where a warning is in place, we are expecting to see 18-20mm of rainfall an hour with totals of 60-80mm but that warning is not covering the Tauranga area.”

Motorists are being warned to drive with care as the rain will make the roads slippery for a while.

Apparently have spent tens of millions to remedy flooding issues, yet this :little" storm breezing through has hightlighted again the deficiencies in the prime areas of Councils responsibility: three waters and roads.
