At the heart of a celebration of all things British, including cars, bikes, tractors, yorkshire pud and mushy peas, is one Tauranga resident and his 1969 MG CGT.

Brits at the Beach is an annual British-themed festival held in Whangamata, which features an iconic car Great British Car and Bike Show.

Bob Sherman, the owner of the 1969 MG, was one of many who entered this years' competition, which he says is new to him.

'My wife Jill and I have owned our 1969 MGC GT for about 14 years, and its restoration was completed in time to enter it in the Ellerslie Intermarque Concours d'Elegance in February 2016.

'The only competitions it's been entered in are the Ellerslie event and Brits at The Beach,” he says. 'This was our first year entered in Brits at the Beach.

'Ours was one in a team of two cars, entered by the MG Car Club, which came third.

'Our car was awarded 3rd highest individual points of all the cars entered.

'There were a lot of very nice cars at Brits so the win was unexpected and a huge thrill.”

Event organiser Colin McGabe says the car is in ‘absolute mint condition'.

'This is the first MG to be named "Best Car" at Brits in the 8 years the event has run,” says Colin.

'This year was fantastic, there were a huge number of cars and the weather stayed dry for us on Saturday and the feedback was great, people are enjoying the event and I haven't had one negative comment.”

Due to weather this years' event was the last time it will be hosted in spring, with BATB being moved to the third weekend of February.
