Bonfire lighters asked to keep it clean

With the weather finally heating up in Tauranga, many people will be planning a bonfire at the beach.

Tauranga City Council have advised if you're one of them, make sure it's safe for you, and everyone else who uses our stunning beaches.

'It's great that you can go to the beach in Tauranga and have a bonfire with your mates, but over last summer, a lot of these fires left nails and glass behind. No one wants to stand on something like that when they're taking their kids for a swim,” says Mark Smith, TCC manager of parks and recreation.

The remains of beach fires are cleaned up by hand at ratepayers' expense. The fires are often still hot and full of dangerous debris, like pallet nails.

The fact that people can have bonfires is one of the things people love about Tauranga in the summer, Mark says.

It's a rite of passage for ‘mounties' and no one wants to see it banned.

'But as we've gotten bigger and more popular the fires are becoming more common. By all means, have your fire, but take a rubbish bag with you, light it below the high tide mark, and don't use pallets as firewood. It's a win for everyone.”

its time to ban fires on the beach. Not hard to endorse-you know, stop the crazies who ruin it for all.

I think it is time to ban public firework sales because animals suffer, properties and people the emergency services have to deal with burns injuries, property fires and the SPCA and veterinarians scared and injured animals and often animals are so traumatized and scared they disappear like the little dog from Bethlehem Harry I think his name was. do we really need to have private sales, Public displays organised by pyrotechnics is the way to go no issues with same,

Is there some kind of law that outlaws the above from being let off late at night or early hours of the morning? Personally I am sick to death of same from say 10pm to say 3-4 am my animals are absolutely petrified of same. i doubt if I am the only one that is against these bangers. Personally I would love to get hold of the culprits and drown the bangers so they cant be let off. How do other folk feel about the hours these are let off and the noise they make?

I completely agree with Tyraone. Also, we seem to have to put up with it all for weeks afterwards. The cost overall is crazy.
