Wet start to next week

Those of us who have been enjoying a sunny start to the school holidays, can unfortunately expect to see a change as a low passes the country.

The low pressure system bringing the wet weather approaches the country from late tomorrow.

Accumulated rainfall is forecast for Saturday and Sunday, with most of the North Island receiving wet weather as the front spreads over New Zealand.

The South Island will also experience wet weather but mostly in the central and northern areas.

MetService meteorologist Tom Adams says the weather is not out of the ordinary.

'With the type winter New Zealand has had this year, it's not too unusual to have a low crossing the country,” he says.

'We've had heaps of these occur all winter but this one does come after a week of fairly good weather which is a bit of a shame, people have just gotten used to warmer weather and then this comes along but it is to be expected this time of year.

'We do have a severe weather warning attached with it, all for heavy rain.

'The Bay of Plenty is not under a watch or a warning but winds will be from the northwest as this weather does get closer which means that the rain will build up in the bay.

'Looking further ahead Monday to Tuesday there is a moderate chance of heavy rain for the Bay of Plenty as well.”

He says weather warnings are currently in place for the ranges of Nelson, west of Motueka, Mount Taranaki and areas west of Neslon.

'They're similar to the Bay of Plenty in that they are prone to north and northwesterly winds and when the wind comes in it brings lots of rain with it.

'The warning is from 6pm Saturday to 1am Monday.

'Winds aren't a big part about this it's more about the rain, north westerlies just keep bringing that rain into places like the Bay of Plenty.”

He says while the Bay of Plenty is not under any watches, locals should continue watch out for any warnings that could be issued for heavy rain over the weekend.

'It's not a nice weather event, but the indication is that it's not going to be a ‘once-in-a-many-year' type event.

'We do have these type of events that come across and bring these types of weather from time to time and we should look out for them but it is the type of thing we should expect from spring.”
