Fine weather with southerly breezes

The weather forecast today is for fine weather, but with some heavy showers possible in the afternoon.

It's a three-clothing and one-windproof layer day, quite chilly this morning with southerly breezes. Temperatures today should see a high of 18 and an overnight low of 5 degrees.

The seasons are changing, and it's a perfect time to get planting. Spring has made a welcome arrival and gardens will be starting to come alive again.

The days are getting longer, the soil is warming up and it's the perfect time for planting.

Popular spring crops to plant include beans, beetroot, broccoli, carrots, celery, lettuce, peas, potatoes, spinach and spring onions.

Strawberries are a firm Kiwi favourite! Plant a strawberry patch for delicious juicy strawberries this summer. They're a favourite with the kids and easy to grow!

This day in NZ history, 124 years ago, in 1893, New Zealand became the first nation in the world to grant women the right to vote.

When the governor, Lord Glasgow, signed a new Electoral Act into law, New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world to grant all women the right to vote in parliamentary elections.

Women in most other democracies – including Britain and the United States – did not win the right to vote until after the First World War.

This day in world history in 1783 the first hot-air balloon was sent aloft in France with animal passengers including a sheep, a rooster, and a duck.
