Thunderstorms and hail are being forecast for Tauranga this afternoon.

The MetService says is a moderate risk of thunderstorms developing this afternoon through until the evening.

'As a low-pressure system moves across New Zealand today, most of the country will be on the receiving end of some wet weather accompanied by watches and warnings.

'The North Island is set to receive showers in most places today, with conditions looking favourable for thunderstorms and hail across central and northern areas.”

In addition, a strong wind watch is in force for Northland, and this also increases the chance that Auckland will see strong southwest winds overnight, as a low crosses the upper North Island.

Temperatures have dropped in the Bay this afternoon, and the MetService is forecasting an overnight low of 5C.
