A motorcyclist is in critical condition in Tauranga Hospital following a crash on State Highway 36/Takitimu Drive.

Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection commonly known as ‘the Crossing' at about 7pm.

Senior Sergeant Phil Gillbanks says the male motorcyclist, who was driving a black, Japanese road bike, was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a critical condition.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and appeal for any witnesses to come forward.

The crash closed the stretch for highway for several hours.

Diversions have since been lifted and the highway is now open.

People with information about the crash are asked to contact Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 43300.
