Today's forecast is for cloudy periods and the odd shower, becoming more frequent this evening, with northwesterlies.

It's a three-clothing layer day today with a high of 17 and an overnight low of 12 degrees.

This day in NZ history in 1933, New Zealand's first woman MP was elected to Parliament.

Elizabeth McCombs became New Zealand's first woman Member of Parliament, winning a by-election in the Lyttelton seat caused by the death of her husband, James McCombs.

Although New Zealand women had famously won the right to vote in 1893 they were not allowed to stand for Parliament until 1919.

This day in world history in 1988 Hurricane Gilbert becomes the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere.

Twenty years later on this day in 2008, Hurricane Ike makes landfall in Texas; and becomes the third costliest hurricane in the US.

Some birthdays on this day include Milton Hershey, founder of the famous candy company and born on September 13, 1847.

Roald Dahl, writer, best known for his children's books such as James and the Giant Peach was born on this day in 1911, as was Bill Monroe, musician, and the father of bluegrass.
