The weather forecast today is for showers and fine spells with gusty westerlies.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 16 and an overnight low of 9 degrees.

This day in NZ history in 1868 The Prussian soldier of fortune Gustavus Ferdinand von Tempsky was killed during an assault on Tītokowaru's south Taranaki pa.

His exploits during the tumultuous 1860s had made him a folk hero for many settlers.

Aged only 40 when he died, von Tempsky had earned a reputation as ‘one of the most colourful characters of nineteenth century New Zealand'.

This day in NZ history in 1909 NZ's heaviest gold nugget was found.

‘Messrs Scott and Sharpe' found it at Ross on the West Coast.

Weighing in at 3.09 kg (99.63 ounces), it was named the ‘Honourable Roddy' after the minister of mines, Roderick McKenzie.

Mounted in a ‘fitting setting', it became New Zealand's ‘decidedly handsome' Coronation gift to King George V.

When enquiries were made 40 years later, it was discovered that the nugget had been melted down to make a royal tea service.

Today's quote from Nickey Gumbel - "A lot of problems in the world would be solved if we talked to each other instead of about each other."
