BOP candidate backing ACT leader

Bay of Plenty ACT candidate Bruce Carley, left, will be joining party leader David Seymour, right, on the campaign trail this Saturday.

The ACT Party's Bay of Plenty candidate Bruce Carley will be supporting David Seymour when he comes to Tauranga on Saturday.

The marketing manager is standing to help promote ACT's particular brand of ‘social liberalism' and ‘economic conservatism'.

Bruce, and ex-Aucklander who moved south in 2013, has previously worked in marketing communications for several technology companies. He's now employed by a chain of outdoor power equipment stores across Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

'I joined ACT in early 2014, but had supported the party's ideals of personal choice and self-responsibility for several years before that. A couple of family members have been active in the party for quite some time, and we definitely have a similar outlook.

'I'm drawn to ACT's social liberalism – that is, letting people do what they like with their own money, own bodies and own lives, provided they're not harming anybody else – and their economic conservatism – reducing wasteful government spending so taxpayers can keep more of their earnings to spend on the things and causes that are important to them.”

He says it's not about what ACT can do, but what it can enable people, communities and businesses to do.

'ACT wants to reduce the unnecessary involvement of government in how people go about their lives and livelihoods. We have policies like replacing the RMA in urban areas with legislation that encourages and incentivises councils to free up land so housing can be developed.

'We also want to sell government-owned farms to fund the great work of the many struggling conservation groups, and provide more choice in education so parents can help their children make the most of opportunities.”

Bruce will be among the ACT Party candidates joining leader David Seymour when he visits Tauranga on Saturday.

David will be delivering a speech in Red Square at 11am, which Bruce says will include a new policy announcement.

He says because David Seymour will win Epsom, every party vote for ACT counts.

'Every party vote for ACT is important and vital to electing more ACT MPs, to ensure a centre-right partner for National in the next government,” says Bruce.
