A police officer has allegedly been assaulted on The Strand this afternoon.

The incident occurred just after 1pm.

A woman who witnessed the attack told SunLive the female officer approached a man who ‘appeared to be homeless' near the wharf, on the corner of The Strand and Devonport Road.

An altercation occurred and the officer ended up on the ground.

'Then he started kicking her in the head, she was screaming.”

Two people then chased the man and tackled him to the ground.

The witness says the female officer was taken from the scene in an ambulance.

A police spokesperson says police had been responding to reports of a man acting suspiciously in the street.

‘A man has been taken into custody, but there are no further details as yet.”

Thank you to the people who intervened. Who protects our protectors? Will be interesting to see if the homeless man pulls out the "mental health get out of jail free card".

That is apparently demanded also? Hmmmm makes you wonder, like no understating the rsult here that the man should never have done what did and as usual they make a nusiance of themselves, often verbally chasing down free for nothing money for a drink or pokies. But really, why are they not pick up and shipped off to Waiuru, streets would be a bit safer for it.

Automatically harsher penalties...

should be applied when anybody assaults a police officer- regardless. This is appalling, I hope the officer is okay. Thank goodness others intervened to help.

Judging by your spelling you can't read, so you must have missed the bit where get was kicking the female cop in the heed.

Unfortunately it was inevitable

Despite the many do gooders who say these losers mean no harm, are in need of sympathy/support etc they are a ticking time bomb, a menace , and do the CBD image etc no good at all.Council please pass a BYLAW now and ban transient and homeless from begging etc in doorways. They all get the dole and there is a shelter for them at minimal cost.Let us hope the poor policewoman is not too badly injured, and kicking her head while down?, what animal does this.

give it out but can take it
