Police have released the name of the man whose body was found near Karewa Island, near Tauranga.

Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the body of 60-year-old Laine Richard Kelly was found yesterday afternoon.

Ian says Laine had been missing since Tuesday when he failed to return from a fishing trip.

"His death has been referred to the Coroner.

"While there is no active search for his boat, police welcome any sightings of an aluminium boat with a small overhead canopy and centre console."
