Mount Maunganui will play host to one of New Zealand's largest public meditation events, tomorrow morning at Mount Drury Park.

Mount Unity Mass Meditation is the name of the event which aims to bring locals together to participate in mass meditation.

The event, which is being hosted in conjunction with another mass meditation in Mt Shasta, California, falls on the day of the total solar eclipse for liberation on Earth.

It will see many different groups from around the world simultaneously participating.

The event has been organised by a group of locals including Angela Bowerman, Victoria Ashley, Mataora Rongoa Hotoke and Jinyoo Shun.

Angela says the event aims to promote unity not only with those in the Bay of Plenty but globally, too.

'Research has shown that transcendental meditation by even a small number of people in one place with a specific intent can have a powerful effect on the surrounding community as it can bring a sense of belonging a connectedness with others,” says Angela.

'So tomorrow morning Mount Maunganui are joining the world for unity mass meditation as the solar eclipse passes over America for the first time since 1918 – which is a perfect time for us to make a descion to create unity.”

'We are meditating for peace on earth and to heal earth and all its inhabitants of suffering and chaos.”

The event will witness the first Total Solar Eclipse of its kind and alignment since 1918 and over 400 people are expected to attend in Mount Maunganui.

Those wanting to attend can visit Mount Drury park in Mount Maunganui, tomorrow morning from 6am. For more information visit the event page on Facebook.
