Members of The Gym Tauranga set out to prove themselves this weekend when they took on the Tough Guy & Gal Challenge in Rotorua.

The cross-country event, held on Saturday, pitted teams and individuals against each other and themselves, as they tackled the muddy course at Lakes Ranch.

The Tough Guy & Gal Challenge is described as ‘an extreme off-road running event with obstacles'. The course includes swamp crossings, a spiders web net climb, crawl under barb wire, native bush trails, tunnels, hurdles, a climbing frame, and plenty of mud.

The Gym Tauranga trainer Haylee Aitken says their team of 15 did very well, claiming a trophy in the 6km gym challenge.

'One of our guys also came first in the 12km event, and one of our girls came second in the 6km as an individual.”

She says they started training around two months before the event.

'A lot of the team were from my classes at the gym. I also run a tough guy training session at 7am on Saturday mornings, which go for an hour. But next year we definitely need to practise more hills!”

One of the more memorable obstacles for Haylee was the live electric fence, which runners had to crawl under.

'Pretty much everybody got a shock – if you didn't, you were pretty low to the ground.

'I was awesome. This is the first year we've put in a team, and I think we'll all be doing it again next year. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.”

The challenge is run by Event Promotions, and featured in Wellington, Hamilton, Auckland, Hawke's Bay, and Palmerston North before coming to Rotorua.
