Police and AOS staff are currently in attendance at an incident in rural Morrinsville, in which shots have been fired at police.

Police attempted to stop a speeding vehicle on Thames Street in Morrinsville around midnight last night.

The driver failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated.

The offending vehicle eventually stopped on Kurunui Road and one of the occupants got out and shot at police.

A second police unit arrived and fired shots in return, before the three police staff took cover in nearby farmland.

The area was cordoned off and the Waikato Armed Offenders Squad arrived shortly after to escort the officers to safety.

Waikato District Commander Superintendent Bruce Bird says the officers are uninjured.

'Police are currently speaking to a person who is assisting with enquiries,” he says.

'Cordons are still in place and further enquiries are being made to locate the offenders. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.”
