Slip closes gorge again

A slip affected the same stretch of road last month. File photo.

State Highway 2 between Opotiki and Gisborne is closed once more at the Waioeka Gorge, following a slip.

The slip is around 36 kilometres from Opotiki.

The New Zealand Transport Agency ask people to avoid the area or find an alternative route if they can.

Geotechnical engineers will assess the site today.

It follows a slip which closed the highway for several days last month, affecting travel and local businesses.

A further media update will be provided tomorrow afternoon. If the situation changes the latest information will be published at www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic

Why not.... While the highway

Is closed (once more), get the airforce to shoot a few rounds into the area and shake a few more slips that are about to move... now... rather than fix this one and have another next week... and the week after? Sort of like what they do for avalanches in snow countries over seas... clear the area and MAKE the avalanche/slip happen rather than having to keep closing the highway and bring back the machines with monotonous regularity... lets get the next few slips over and done with now, while the machinery is nearby? I am sure geologists could identify areas due (or overdue) to slip? I am sure the airforce wouldn't mind giving the area a little bit of a shake? There is always the risk a natural slip could bury a couple of passing school buses. Make them happen when we want I say....
