Block NZ competitors Dylz and Dyls strapped on their tool belts to help a Tauranga mother renovate her garage into a rumpus room.

The men were in town yesterday as part of Haier New Zealand's Haier Help prize.

Dylz and Dyls, who are travelling around New Zealand to provide practical renovation or handyman assistance to homes, schools or community projects, stopped by homeowner Jade Riley's house on Eversham Road.

Jade had many odd jobs that needed to be completed, but after scouting out the site in the morning, the boys felt completing the rumpus room for Jade and her children was the most important.

'I've been living in the house for three and a half years and I usually get my dad Dondon to help out, but he's 74 now,” says Jade.

'Every time he comes around, he has a job to do around the house, and that takes away the time that he has to spend with the kids.”

Both of Jade's children have health issues Zahnee Riley-Campbell, 12, has Asperger's Syndrome, a Haemangioma tumour and Phaces Syndrome, and Zandon Campbell, 10, has Autism.

Haier spokesperson Thalia Stronge says although it was hard to choose which Tauranga homeowner deserved the prize, they felt that Jade's story stood out the most.

'When we told her that she had won the renovation prize, she started crying on the phone.”

Dylz and Dyls had three and a half hours to put up a ranch slider and fix cupboard doors.

'They were really deserving of the Haier Help prize, it was great to have the opportunity to do what we could to help them out. It was an ambitious task, but we were confident we could get it done, and we did,” says Dyls.

'It was good to see the kids' smiley faces, they even whipped out the tape measure and helped us with the measurements. They were great apprentices,” says Dylz.

The boys are now off to Hamilton for two days and then Auckland on July 28.
