A woman who was drunk and racially abused a Muslim woman in Huntly earlier this year has been sentenced to 12 months' supervision.
Megan Walton, a 27-year-old from Auckland, had previously pleaded guilty to two charges of assault and one charge of insulting behaviour.
She was sentenced in Palmerston North District Court yesterday.
Police said in February Walton came out of the public toilets in Huntly and started racially abusing Muslim New Zealander Mehpara Khan, before throwing cans of alcohol at her, and attempting to punch her twice.
The court heard Walton was so intoxicated, she did not remember the incident.
The charges were laid after Ms Khan uploaded a video of the attack to social media.

I hope the court carefully examined all accounts of the incident since there are always various differing versions. I'm wondering why the complainant uploaded her video footage onto social media instead of handing it to the police with a statement. The media report is a bit lacking as it doesn't give much detail nor mention provocation or how it started. If the complainant is of a much higher intellect than the offender, and exploited that, we could feel a bit sorry for the offender too.

... is that unless they are sincere they are worthless. Never say you're sorry, when you're not. Seek rather to understand the opposing viewpoint and then see if there is any room to make a defusing statement when you can see the effect your actions had. Public drunkenness, in and of itself, is enough to suggest an apology; add Racism to it and there certainly is a case for the perpetrator to have a quiet chat with the victim and possibly an "amends project" to help make it right. What's really needed here is a mental adjustment as to how you think Kiwis should relate to each other. That doesn't usually happen without some communication...
