Tauranga City Council's building services team has seen a significant uptick in commercial building consent applications, with several major commercial projects recently issued, in processing, or coming in for processing over the next eight months.

In June 2017, building services issued 22 commercial building consents for a total value of $45,774,900, helping to push the total value of consents issued in any one month to an all-time high of $105,916,943.

The type and size of these projects reflects Tauranga's continued growth as the city moves from mainly residential dwelling building consents into commercial building development.

'The economic building base has reached a tipping point and is moving from mainly residential construction to a higher percentage of commercial building development,” says Patrick Schofield, Manager: Building Services.

The upcoming commercial builds are all multi-million dollar projects requiring significant time investment.

'All these projects will need a Council project manager to assist and coordinate the smooth operation of the building consenting, inspection, and code compliance processes,” says Schofield.

Tauranga City Council has seen, or is expecting, the following building consents:

  • Salt Apartments – Girven Road
  • Tauriko Crossing stage two
  • University building on Durham Street
  • Zespri's new building
  • Shopping centre in the Coast development
