Over 60 Murupara residents received free feedback and advice to promote safer driving over the colder winter months.

At the community event, which took place in Murupara for the first time, residents were given a free vehicle safety check, as well as, advice and feedback on how to fix certain faults and maintain a road-worthy car.

This was the first time the event had been held at Maurupara, previously similar Tyres, Windscreen, Indicators, Rust and Lights (T.W.I.R.L.) checks had been run throughout the Bay of Plenty.

'Many were surprised to learn that a T.W.I.R.L. check is easy to do at home. Badly worn wiper blades, defective lights and worn tyres are very common and easily fixable faults, which are made all the more dangerous in winter weather,” says Murupara ward councillor Alison Silcock.

She says people really appreciated the free advice and feedback that was given and it was great to see so many people taking advantage of the checks.

'Our District is notorious for narrow, winding roads and corners, which become even more dangerous when icy. Drivers need to remember to slow down, drive to the conditions and keep a safe following distance, and events like this provide a great reminder.”

On top of the free vehicle checks residents were given complimentary cups of hot soup and winter lucky-dip goody bags. Larger spot prizes, such as emergency vehicle kits and petrol vouchers were also given out.

'We look forward to seeing this event make a return to Murupara in the future,” says Alison.

The event was carried out by the Eastern Bay Road Safety Programme, the New Zealand Transport Agency, and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.
