UPDATED: State Highway 2, near Matata, is now open to one lane.

The highway was closed earlier today when a slip came down blocking both lanes.

The NZ Transport says State Highway 2 near Matata now has one lane open but people should continue to expect delays.

A large tree fell across both lanes on the Matata Straight near Murphy's Holiday Camp.

An alternative route is via State Highway 33, State Highway 30 and State Highway 34 but that will add approximately 45 minutes to a journey.

Imagine how many $$$$$HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS this slip would have cost, there is NOWHERE for the trucks to turn around there, will NZTA pay for the downtime for this, by the time they organize a (CON) TRACTOR would take hours to get gear there, A BIG BULLDOZER from Matata side and push it around to let traffic through,(BUT) hang on, you need a BRAIN for this, all the engineers with their clipboards and Flouro jackets on site,me tinks that this will not be the only one,all those huge trees hanging over the road,(WILL) come down and may crush a car or truck or kill someone, when will NZTA listen to people about concerns of things like this, but no ,NO ONE LISTENS, my thoughts only on this subject,Sunlive is No1 for News,Thankyou,10-4 out.
