Police have laid charges against a driver who hit a motorcyclist and fled the scene earlier this week.
The crash occurred on the roundabout at the intersection of 11th Avenue and Devonport Road on Monday afternoon.
The driver failed to stop at the time, but their vehicle was later located by police, who have since spoken to them.
The 17-year-old, who is on a restricted driver's licence, is facing three charges – careless driving causing injury, failing to stop and ascertain injury at a crash, and failing to render assistance at a crash.
They will appear in the District Court at Tauranga in three weeks' time.
A police spokesperson says the motorcyclist remains in a serious condition in hospital.
'He has suffered a pelvic fracture, fractured left arm, and internal injuries.”

That driver should have their licence cancelled until they've grown up and have to reapply in a couple of years. Maybe having to take the bus everywhere will reinforce the fact driving is a privilege and with it comes responsibility.

This person may well be a police runner in the future, I agree with the others stand him/her down for a few years. But no, the PC brigade will get in the way. Mainly the people in the Courthouse.

I doubt this young driver has any idea of the potential life-changing injuries he/she has caused. The long term prognosis for a pelvic fracture is not good. Some advocate better driver education, but the reality is that many younger people these days don't have much empathy, let alone sympathy. Where did we go wrong?
