Solving Greerton’s traffic woes

Tauranga City Council has come up with some solutions to Greerton’s traffic problems. File photo.

The Cameron Road and Chadwick Road roundabout is ranked as the second-worst local road location in the city in terms of serious, minor and non-injury crashes.

Overall in the last five years, there have been 70 crashes.

Two of these were serious crashes, involving a pedestrian and a cyclist, respectively. The crash trend is increasing with 23 crashes in 2016 (prior to this the average number of crashes was around eight per year).

Tauranga City Council has been developing and reviewing options to help improve the safety of Greerton village roads for everyone – people walking, on bikes, on mobility scooters and in cars.

They now have an option they believe is the best to deliver all of the desired outcomes for this area of Tauranga, which is to address the primary issue of people's safety while retaining the Greerton 'village feel'.

It includes a new roundabout at Pooles Road, installing lights at pedestrian crossings, and single-laning through intersections.

The concepts and thinking behind the preferred option will be on display at the Greerton Library from 3pm Thursday July 27 until 2pm Wednesday August 2.

Council staff, including traffic engineers, will be available for people to discuss the concept at Greerton Library on Thursday July 27 from 3pm-7pm and Wednesday August 2 from 12pm-2pm.

For more information on the project and what is planned, visit www.tauranga.govt.nz/greerton-traffic or contact the council on 07 577 7000.

Barkes Corner daily

The easy fix for the daily snarl-ups would be to copy the underpass at Welcome Bay. Initially maybe expensive but a practical solution, especially with the planned expansion of Tauranga at Tauriko.

Double-Lane Cameron Road!

They should double-lane ALL of Cameron Road, and put pedestrian access OVER the road [like at the Pyes Pa roundabout] at regular intervals .. and it would be way better than negotiating all these roundabouts and pedestrian crossings!

In 13 years of working down Chadwick rd west and living across down Pooles rd and using the roundabout anything up to 12 times a day I cannot ever recall seeing an accident on the roundabout and I just consider this as rubbish info from bullshit castle in Grey st. The intersection can be better designed to help with the flow but the major problem is at Barkes Cnr. and nobody at council has even acknowledged that yet. Worse the council is about to allow an intensive housing project at Chadwick West with 150 units and 300 cars most without parking. Our councillors don't even care, indeed they are invisible.

council are brainless, to fix it remove roundabout install lights with crossing widen to 2 lanes each way, remove crossing at cameron rd an move it north, who ever is designing these latest roads is a plain idiot take the Coast round about for eg, TCC cant get the current lights phased properly as it is so how are they going to be any good at anything else

I agree with golly gosh and cynical me the number of accidents/has Mr Parkes fudged the truth yet again to justify wasting more ratepayers money is it not about time Mr Mayor or our councillors for this ward fronted up with the true numbers ?

I agree totally with your comment, I also think it would be better to improve flow rather than restrict it further, this surely would reduce frustration of the "stop-start" nature of vehicles in the area. As a continuous road user in the city , Barkes corner is the real culprit I think. To have a wish to "redesign" the Cameron/Chadwick roundabout when there is an average of .27 "crashes" per week..yup, just over 1 per month...is this necessary at all?..to restrict is of course the Council objective as always, but free flowing traffic would surely help along Cameron Road, and yes absolutely to two laning all the way, with improvement at Barkes Corner. I suspect inattention yet again to be the main culprit, major restriction along with unnecessary cost is not the answer.

what can i tell you

Cameron rd from Chadwick rd to Barkes corner could have been 4 laned but instead put a BLINKIN footpath in nearest racetrack, what a STUPID idea,100s of meters of concrete that would have cost $$$ thousands, but hang on ,i do not have a Deploma ,but have a good brain, and as you can see ,planners have none,OPUS, had kids out on Hewletts rd the other day, (NOW) where do they have the SKILLS to do that job,(know you have to start somewhere,(BUT) NO knowledge with them. my thoughts only on this subject,Sunlive, Thankyou,10-4 out, Phew.
