The 2017 Smokefree Rockquest regional finals is expected to hit all the right notes once again for young bands in the Bay of Plenty this week.

The event will be held at the Totara St performing arts centre and will have performances from 12 Bay of Plenty high school bands who competed last month.

They will play off for first and second place prizes and the opportunity to go into the judging pool for the six spots at the national finals in September.

Smokefree rockquest founder and director Pete Rainey says at this level some entrants are already demonstrating the qualities needed to become successful in the music industry.

'It's fascinating for us to look back at success stories like Kimbra, Evermore and Broods where we could see the star factor right back at the regional level.”

'Friday night's event gives a new cohort of bands the opportunity to take their obsession with music and develop the organisational and stage craft skills that will help them become another Kiwi music success.”

The top two bands from this week's performances will send in a 15 minute video of their choice to go into the national finalists judging pool.

'We're really proud that our association with Smokefree has been part of a huge social change in New Zealand over the past 28 years.

The 12 bands come from Bethlehem College, Katikati and Rutherford Colleges, Rotorua Boys' High School Western Heights High School, Otumoetai College, Taupo-nui-a-Tia College, Whakatane and Trident High Schools, Western Heights High School and TKKM o Huiarau.

Prizes for the national winners include Rockshop vouchers, a NZ On Air recording, video and promotion package, a ‘Decent Exposure' campaign on The Edge TV, a photo shoot branding package, and a scholarship.

The regional finals will be held on Friday June 30 at 7pm. Tickets will cost $20 for adults and $10 for students and can be purchased from NZTix.co.nz.
