The Mauao base track is expected to re-open this morning after being closed for safety reasons yesterday afternoon.
They were looking at claimed wave heights in the entrance of up to 6.6 metres, which were expected to continue to rise until high tide at about 5:30pm.
At 4pm when the track was closed, the Port of Tauranga's A Beacon was recording a maximum wave height of 4.9m in an easterly wind gusting to 31knots (57.4km/h).
At 9.30am today the maximum wave height at A beacon is 4.2m with an easterly wind gusting to 22 knots (44 km/h).
MetService is forecasting the wind to ease this afternoon, with high tide expected at 6.24pm, half an hour after sunset.
The slip site on the Pilot Bay side of Mauao remains. City council staff are awaiting signoff on temporary access, which is expected to be completed in a matter of weeks once construction starts.

It was a wise decision. If there was a major deluge and slump, there would have been no warning for anyone on the track to get out of the way.
