Tauranga's flag on the roundabout at the bottom of Elizabeth Street is flying at half-mast today, as a mark of mourning and respect for a Pacific leader.

Government buildings and councils are acknowledging the funeral of His Excellency Womtelo Reverend Baldwin Lonsdale, the Head of State of the Republic of Vanuatu.

The instruction, from central government, applies to all government departments, buildings and naval vessels which have flag poles and normally fly the New Zealand Flag.

Ministry for Culture & Heritage spokesperson Christine Seymour says the flag is often lowered for foreign prime ministers and New Zealand service people who are killed overseas, as a mark of respect.
