Strong kayak team named for worlds

Lisa Carrington will make a return to her favoured K1 200m at August's world championships in the Czech Republic, with selectors confirming a powerful four-strong team.

Carrington will again join Kayla Imrie, Caitlin Ryan and Aimee Fisher in the team, after the quartet made a powerful statement in the two ICF World Cup series rounds in Europe last month.

Between them, they won six golds in two weeks, including consecutive titles in the K4 500m, with Ryan and Fisher also claiming individual medals as Carrington focused on the team boats.

Carrington alone will carry the individual duties in Racice from August 23-27, however, attempting to defend the K1 200m and 500m titles she won in 2015.

'We were very impressed by the whole squad's performance during the World Cups, particularly in the crew boats, and our coaches will be formulating combinations for the world championships over the coming weeks,” says Canoe Racing New Zealand boss Mark Weatherall.

'Every one of our paddlers in this team has proven themselves world-class, so it will be exciting to see what sort of performances they can produce.”

North Shore's Briar McLeely will be the reserve for the team.

NZ team: Lisa Carrington (Eastern Bay of Plenty), Aimee Fisher (Hawke's Bay), Kayla Imrie (Mana), Caitlin Ryan (North Shore). Reserve: Briar McLeely (North Shore).
