Community action group Protect Karangahake is organising a peaceful protest for today at 1pm.

The action is in response to the prospecting activity by New Talisman Gold Mines on Karangahake Mountain, an iconic heritage conservation area in the Coromandel Peninsula.

Meeting at the top of Crown Hill Road, this protest walk will highlight the area of the conservation estate that is threatened by New Talisman's activity and stop outside the newly locked portal pad gate.

Protect Karangahake chair Duncan Shearer says the group is formed from concerned locals.

'We're members of the communities that surround Mount Karangahake, fearful that the resumption of mining activity will once again degrade and destroy the environment, the mana of the place and their enjoyment of the area.”
