Take opportunity to vote on referenda

I was delighted to learn that Tauranga City Council is to hold a referenda on three issues for which they would appreciate ratepayers input.

The subjects are Easter trading, pokie machines and how councillors are elected. Councillors called it a ‘survey' – a referendum by another name.

I'm baffled why, when citizens call for a poll/referendum, councillors staunchly oppose the notion. When one of their own want it, the motion is passed with comments like, ‘it's a fantastic tool' and ‘money well spent'.

I do hope all ratepayers take the opportunity to vote because we seldom get an opportunity.

....about the thoughts, hopes and aspirations of the local community if we did hold such a 'survey' regularly and on several matters perhaps. To make it "cost effective" perhaps it could be done online using the rating number or personally on a dedicated device at a Civic Building maybe. However due to the possible inaccuracies of such a survey, I think it should not be binding in any way, but certainly would give Councillors clear indication as to the wishes of the people to whom they serve, and should be held accountable for the end result(s), whichever way that goes.
