The University of Waikato Midlands U21 Women's Hockey team received good support from Tauranga and Bay of Plenty players in their victory last week.

The team triumphed in the New Zealand U21 tournament, held in Auckland, winning almost every game.

There was only one draw for the Midlands girls during the round-robin play, in which seven region from across the country competed.

Head coach Nicky Smith says they had been training hard for nine weeks after players were selected in March, including playing pre-season games against other teams.

'It's paid off – this is the second year in a row we've won.”

The U21 Men's team came fourth in the contest against teams Auckland, North Harbour, Central, Capital, Southern, and Canterbury.

Nicky says Tauranga produces quite a few good female hockey players.

'From our U21 team, three of the girls played with the Black Sticks against India in Pukekohe recently. Frances Davies is a Tauranga girl, and she's been named in 25-strong Black Sticks squad, as is Amy Robinson.”
