Art gallery window smashed in fight

The Tauranga Art Gallery window was broken early Saturday morning.

An early morning fight outside the Tauranga Art Gallery has left one of the gallery's windows a bit worse for wear.

One of the participants is understood to have hit the art gallery window hard enough to break toughened plate glass.

'I think it was early Saturday morning when it happened,” says gallery media co-ordinator Martine Pierhagen.

'We do get a call from the security company if an alarm goes off. I believe it was just a fight outside by the bus stop, people hanging out there, and one's gone through the window.

'One of our staff got the call, so she came out and we got someone in to secure the glass, because at the moment we have some quite valuable artworks in here. All insured and secured, but you don't want to make it easy for people.”

The gallery is currently hosting the Paradox Tauranga Street Art Festival which includes the most extensive collection of works by the acclaimed street artist Banksy, in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Little Trooper shop across the road has had a window broken twice in two weeks, says Martine.

Wouldn't it be nice if the culprits were ordered to pay for the new glass - but we know they won't be don't we!
