What’s On? Books & Basketball

The 30th annual Tauranga Rotary Club Easter Book Sale will be keep booklovers occupied today. File photo.

Well here we are: Easter Sunday, 2017.

The supermarkets are closed, the churches are filling up, and sugar is being ingested in unholy amounts by children for whom confectionery is actually quite common in their daily lives, thus rendering the Easter ritual of giving chocolate rather banal.

If you'd like to learn more about Easter, it's quite possible you'll find a book on the subject down at the 30th annual Tauranga Rotary Club Easter Book Sale, being held at the Seeka Coolstore on Totara Street Mount Maunganui.

I, for one, am exceedingly jealous of those who will have the opportunity to rifle through the second-hand books on display. It's a great way to find books that are out of print, as well as lovely old copies of the classics.

The sale continues until tomorrow, from 9am-4.30pm. EFTPOS is available, no credit cards or cheques.

If books aren't your thing – and there is a depressing thought – there's always sport. The Mel Young Easter Basketball Classic is currently being played in Tauranga, with more than 1000 young basketballers taking part.

Games are being played at ASB Arena, Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre, Tauranga Boys' College and Tauranga Intermediate, with 14 courts running concurrently.

The tournament runs from Friday, April 14 to Monday, April 17. Spectators are welcome, and admission is free. Find out more at: taurangacitybasketball.co.nz
