What’s On? Jazz & cars

Good morning Sunners, and welcome to Saturday – and what a Saturday it's going to be, with plenty of exciting events taking place across the city!

While the sun's currently out and shining, MetService forecasts a few showers today which should clear by evening, so pack a jacket if you plan to head out to the 55th National Jazz Festival being held across the CBD, or the Happy Days car show up at Katikati's Diggelmann Park.

Get jumping and jiving and grooving with the 55th annual National Jazz Festival which has returned to Tauranga this Easter Weekend.

The central city will also explode into life with more than 20 bands and musicians playing across six stages at various locations as part of the Downtown Carnival today, from 12pm-6pm.

This year's carnival sees the inclusion of the Grey Street Precinct, which features Dixieland on the Grey St stage, says festival director Becks Chambers.

'We've got some different things happening in Grey St, which will be fun and add a new vibe to the festival, while on-stage will be Tauranga favourites like Bay Dixie who've played the festival for years and years, Ben Wilcock's solo boogie, plus fantastic Melbourne band Shirazz.”

Things will also kick up another notch with the Hurricane Party, which has now been relocated to Totara Street at the Mauao Performing Arts Centre, featuring Swamp Thing and Brilleaux on tonight, from 6.30pm.

And if you haven't done so already, check out this week's Life+Style pull out in The Weekend Sun for a profile on legendary multi-instrumentalist Robbie Lavën, who's performing with Bay Dixie, Kokomo and the Bay City Ramblers during the National Jazz Festival's Downtown Carnival today and tomorrow.

The 55th National Jazz Festival takes place at various locations in Tauranga from April 13-17. For more information, visit: www.jazz.org.nz

The annual Happy Days car show is on at Katikati's Diggelmann Park today. Supplied Photo.

Whatever your vehicular fancy may be, it's guaranteed to be parked up at Katikati's Diggelmann Park for the Happy Days car show, which opens to the public at 9.30am

Organiser Allan Smith says last year the event attracted 97 cars and crowds of people – this year he expects the same.

Trophies will be awarded to the Best Ford, Best Chev, Best Mopar, Best Australian car and Best British car, Best Hotrod, Best Pickup Truck, People's Choice and a Best Other award for 'anything strange that might turn up.”

This year organsiers have introduced a Best Dressed competition for lady show-goers, so they can dress up in rock ‘n' roll theme – like they do at many other car shows around.

Along with awesome cars, there'll be heaps of food and drink available, entertainment for young ones, and live music throughout the show.

And even better - all gate proceeds will be gifted to two local charities or community groups.

The Happy Days car show is on at Diggelmann Park, Main Road, Katikati, today from 8.30am for cars entering the show, and 9.30am onwards for the public. Entry for cars and people is a gold coin donation.
