UPDATED 7.59PM: Police have confirmed that the person killed in a crash in Taupo earlier this afternoon was a 77-year-old man.

Senior Sergeant Fane Troy says man died after a collision involving two vehicles in Rotokawa earlier this afternoon.

The crash happened on Broadlands Road, between Centennial Drive and SH1, in the Taupo area.

This Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the collision.

One person has died following a crash involving two vehicles in Taupo.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Broadlands Rd, Rotokawa at 2.19pm.

"Broadlands Rd between Centennial Drive and SH1 will be closed for up to three hours," says a statement from police.

"This is to allow the Serious Crash Unit to investigate and for Police to co-ordinate clearing the scene."

Drivers should take alternative routes.
