Concern that rocks, trees and vegetation loosened in yesterday's heavy rain could fall over night has resulted in the Western Bay of Plenty District Council closing Rocky Cutting Road.

The road is closed to all traffic from house number 354 onwards due to the threat of falling rocks and/or trees from the surrounding bank.

Council Transport Manager Alex Finn says a number of contractors have assessed the site and are concerned for the safety of motorists who could be using the road overnight.

'Because of this we've made the decision to close the road until our engineers can make a proper assessment in the morning,” says Alex.

There is no danger to any houses or other property. Signage is now in place at the closure site. Alternative access is via Waitao Road.
