This Saturday Tauranga Racecourse will host the Bayleys International Raceday, the city's richest sporting event with $300,000 worth of prize money on offer.

The 10-race programme includes the Group Two Windsor Park Stud Japan-New Zealand International Trophy, the Drymix Cement Bay of Plenty Cup and the Triton Pacific Owens Plate.

The Kevin Myers trained Scapolo will make the trip from Wanganui and carry the top weight of 60kg. With 17 wins and just under $700,000 in prize money, Scapolo will start as one of the favourites, but a wide draw and 59kg's may be hard.

The field also features last year's New Zealand Derby winner, Rangipo, but the fairly-even field may see the combination of Roger James and leading jockey, Danielle Johnson, combine to make lightweight Romantic Maid the favourite.

Our Kingsway, a last start winner and course specialist, shouldn't be overlooked, along with Awapuni trained Beefeater, who has been very consistent.

Local Trainer Jim Pender, with four Japan Trophy wins will have a runner in Ohope Prince. The Japan Trophy Race is number eight of a 10-race programme and scheduled for 4.41pm.

Off the field the glamour will also be on show with the annual ‘Fashion in the Fields' competition, which includes three categories for women and one for men.

The event is at Tauranga Racecourse in Greerton on Saturday, March 25. Gates open 9.30am, with the 10-race programme underway at 12.30pm. For more information, visit: racingtauranga.co.nz
