Getting active at lunchtime

A dozen men and women donned their active wear for a free lunchtime Pilates class in the sun this afternoon.

'Inhale and bend, exhale and straighten.” Experienced Pilates instructor Trudi Calder led the class through an entry-level Pilates workout on Tauranga's Waterfront.

'We didn't do any advanced exercises, it was probably a level one or two Pilates class. I wouldn't do advanced work with people who I didn't know. I just tried to do general workout in a group setting like that, so it's safe and sustainable for everyone.”

Led by BodyZone Gym, the event was aimed at bringing the community together and encouraged Tauranga businesspeople to get active during their lunchtime.

Trudi says being outdoors and among nature is one of the most beautiful experiences.

'You're with the elements, you can feel the breeze, you can feel the sun.”

It can also be more challenging, says Trudi.

'Because there's so much activity going on around you, you actually realise when you're doing something like Pilates or yoga in an outdoor setting, you're focusing on exactly what you're doing. So you're mindfully moving, which means you're sort of meditating while you're moving.

'It's good for the soul being outdoors, in the sunshine, exercising, breathing, you can't really beat that.”

Trudi is happy with the turnout and hopes to run another free lunchtime Pilates class outdoors in the near future.
