Man killed after being hit by car

Police have blocked off the section of Vale Street outside Countdown.

UPDATED: A man is dead after being hit by a car in Bureta this morning.

Police and other emergency services are attending the crash and Vale Street is blocked between Bureta Road and Ngatai Road.

"It appears a man has been hit by a car on Bureta Road," says a statement from police.

"Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area if possible."

Police have confirmed that a man in his 80s has died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle is being spoken to by police and the deceased's next of kin has been notified.

Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash on Vale Street, outside Countdown.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says a pedestrian has been hit by a car.

The caller, who did not want to be named, says the accident is at the intersection of Bureta Road and Vale Street.

Police and ambulance have been called to the scene.

The road is blocked and motorists are being advised to use an alternative route until the road is re-opened.
