TCC to survey alongside invoices

Councillor Larry Baldock's use of a notice of motion to have council introduce more ways of opening discussion between the council and the community drew fire from some councillors yesterday – because meeting rules prevent councillors from discussing and altering the motion.

Larry's motion that council rates notices and water bills to be used to poll residents on issues, passed with the majority of councillors agreeing to try additional avenues of communication with the electorate.

Staff will prepare surveys for consultation with residents and ratepayers and the survey questions will be mailed out with rates demands and water invoices.

Surveys will also be available through email.

Councillor Steve Morris's objected to the unchangeable list of topics, and the fact that as they were contained in a notice of motion, they could not be debated, or altered.

Topics are: Changes to Easter trading laws, a review of the wards and at large candidates structure, the policy regarding the number of gambling machines permitted in the city, the local alcohol policy, policies in regard to street trees, and protected trees on public land.

Steve's complaint that the list was only of things that councillors wanted to talk about was confirmed in the vote, when no one supported adding the trees question to the list.

Steve says the list means the public will be polled only on subjects that councillors want to talk to the public about.

A question Larry doesn't want to ask the public, is what are the electorate's thoughts on the appointment of non-elected people to council committees, says Steve.

'We can't ask that because the community might say no,” says Steve.

Councillors voted in favour of the motion with Gail McIntosh opposed.

Larry trying to come across as the nice guy, again. Larry, if you cared about your constituents, or any others for that matter, you would put that the questions the ratepayers need honest answers to be included in the current list, which is clearly lacking in interest to most of the ripped off. But I do believe most of us accept this is all Larry is up for, an easy ride.

Who is Larry trying to fool, only himself. Good on Steve and Gail the two councillors who are not scared to speak up and why dont all residents get polled they all pay rates/water raters not just the landowners?

Agree with By nerak another photo op,.one councillor objected to the un changable topics, sure are RIDGID, Easter trading law has been here for 25 yrs and still no end in sight, its nothing to do with TCC if you OWN a SHOP and open, Taupo is,all TCC staff puffing up their chests to keep you down, funny thing is there is never any photos of them who make these rules, all hide behind closed doors,my thoughts only. Thankyou Sunlive 10-4 out.

Another so called "consolation with RATEPAYERS the people that actually pay the RATES (MONEY) that the COUNCIL spends. Actually, its no more than lip service. Watch this space ratepayers will say NO, Councilors will say yes we will spend it..

Here is Larry using his " Bully Boy " tactics once again. How long will it be before the general public realise this failed previous councillor, ex MP and now back in the pay of ratepayers councillor is self serving at our expense. He goes to a council meeting and presents his own agenda and "smooth talks" other gullible councilors to agree with him. Ratepayers require better representation than this.

Perhaps then people should discover this ASAP and then take the time to bother to vote
