Papamoa East flood predictions

The worst case scenario: Papamoa East underwater. Images: www.beforetheflood.com.

Climate change could put Papamoa East, from Domain Road up to Maketu, underwater, according to some predictions.

A new website claims to simulate the possible effects of a global temperature increase on sea levels, showing how coastal cities around the world might fare.

A one or one-and-a-half degree increase in global temperatures doesn't appear to have much of an impact on Tauranga or the surrounding the district.

However, a two degree or higher change could see coastal suburbs threatened, while a four degree increase in global temperatures would put much of the new TEL underwater.

A four degree increase equates to a nine metre rise in sea levels, putting the Tauranga Marina underwater, while sections of the Mount along Totara Street and Hewletts Road look to be transformed into swampy regions.

Parts of Takitimu Drive could also be submerged, necessitating the construction of another harbour bridge – for a brand-new harbour.

The website is part of the promotion for a new National Geographic documentary, Before the Flood, which features actor Leonardo DiCaprio travelling across five continents ‘to witness climate change first-hand'.

All that new housing area will be under water - oh not just houses, schools, shopping centres, roads business ,etc, etc, and the local councils are pushing the development of the "SWAMP" areas - and yes 40/50 years ago basically ALL of the area behind the beach road and sand dunes was SWAMP - subject to flooding on a regular basis - I LIVED IN THE AREA. And I now note that the Council wants to sell off that area along side the "floodways" for housing - and are saying there is not a problem. READ your section purchase agreement VERY CAREFULLY - especially the fine print. You will BUY cheap sections AND sign away any rights to sue the council when your 12 month old house is FLOODED OUT. Watch the space - it will happen!!!!!!!
