Charges laid following serious crashes

Three people are facing driving related charges following serious crashes in the Central North Island.

Police have pressed charges against three drivers following a spate of serious crashes.

The charges relate to two North Island incidents in Taupo and one on the Dessert Road earlier this year.

An Auckland man has been charged with careless driving causing death after a crash on January 7 that claimed the life of Nicholas Calavrias from Wellington.

Nicholas was struck and killed whilst cycling along State Highway 1 in Taupo, and a 22-year-old man will appear in Taupo District Court on April 5.

Also appearing in Taupo on the same date will be a 29-year-old German man, charged with three counts of careless driving causing injury following a head-on crash on State Highway 47 at Turangi, on March 13.

A third charge will be heard in Rotorua District Court on April 19, when a 70-year-old Australian will be appear on five counts of careless driving causing injury.

The charges relate to a crash on State Highway One, Desert Road, on March 5.

'These crashes have affected a number of people, whanau and families, and the wider community,” says Senior Sergeant Fane Troy, of the Taupo Area Road Policing Group.

"Police encourage all drivers and road users to be vigilant while travelling on our roads, to be aware of their surroundings and remain alert.

"Police cannot reiterate enough to wear your seatbelts, slow down, if tired have a break and if you have been drinking then do not drive."
