The design of the $4.5 million Katikati Service Centre, Library and Hub has been finalised in a two-building design – one being the library and the other a community hub.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council has finalised the interior design of the community hub building, incorporating input from the Community Reference Group, the architect and staff.

'What we wanted to achieve with the new building was something that would be an anchor for the Katikati town centre,” says the council group manager infrastructure services, Gary Allis.

'This is an exciting development for Katikati and fits really well with the vision that was set in the Katikati Town Centre plan.”

Library features include:

  • An open plan building with the library and council services on the ground floor
  • An outdoor reading room
  • A heritage centre celebrating Katikati and the wider district on the mezzanine level.

The community hub will have:

  • Two large spaces with the ability to seat up to 180 people in total
  • Two smaller 10 person meeting rooms
  • Art and exhibit space
  • A kitchen able to cater for large groups
  • All areas have WiFi.

The build is being funded by Council and the Katikati Community Board through the Katikati Town Centre Fund, the Katikati Community Roading fund, the Recreation and Leisure Reserve, and a lottery grant, with the remainder being a Council loan.

The increases in the project budget had been offset by savings from other Council projects, which means there will be no impact on rates.

'The hub building is a real opportunity for the Katikati community to have a central hub – a multi-functional building that will provide a link between businesses and community functions,” says Gary.

Works on the Katikati library and community hub will begin in July with works planned to be finished by early 2018.

That looks impressive Gary I am sure the elderly will be impressed, stairways and 2 stories to boot a typical WBOPDC rail road job. Well Done.

It is my understanding that all buildings open to the pubic MUST have disability access to all floors!

Considering how many re-tired people live in katikati, and how many more are moving here,it makes sense to build stairway access to stop staff beingbothered by customers,in their luxurious offices.I wonder how much so-called architects were paid for what looks like a glorified cow-shed. The statement 'at No cost to Ratepayers' is also de-meaning ratepayers intelligence.
