Rockfall forces Mount track closure

Mauao's Oruahine track has been closed due to a rockfall.

The track around the western face of the mountain will remain closed for at least the duration of the weekend, while Tauranga City Council investigates the cause and ensures the track is safe for the public to use.

The Oruahine track goes around the face of the Mount above the harbour entrance channel.

From the track leaving from the stone steps walkers can either go left up the steep track which is the Waikorere or right around the Oruahine, says city council communications advisor Siobhan Keogh.

The Oruahine Track used to connect with the goat track from the base track, but that was closed after floods a few years back.

Council has no information on the origins of the rockfall at this time.

All other tracks, including the Waikorire and 4WD tracks to the summit, remain open and unaffected.
