One critically injured in SH2 crash

UPDATED 5.45PM:Diversions put in place after a serious crash on SH2 south of Katikati this afternoon have now been lifted.

A critically injured elderly man was airlifted to Waikato Hospital, and two others seriously injured in the crash near Wharawhara Raod at about 2.55pm.

The injured who were travelling in the same vehicle as the critically injured man have been transported to Tauranga Hospital by St John Ambulance.

The crash occurred outside the Seeka Packhouse near the intersection of SH2 and Wharawhara Road.

Diversions are still in place down Tetley Road and Marshall Road and motorists travelling through the area should expect delays.

EARLIER 3.40PM:

One person is critically injured and two others suffered serious injuries following a two-car crash on State Highway 2 south of Katikati.

A police spokesperson confirms a section of SH2 near Wharawhara Road is closed following the accident which occurred at about 2.55pm.

Diversions are currently in place down Tetley Road and Marshall Road. Police are asking motorists to either delay their travel or avoid travelling through the area where and if possible.

A witness to the crash says one of the vehicles involved crossed the centreline, smashed into an oncoming car, then crashed through a fence and slammed a parked car through the wall of the Seeka packhouse.

Emergency services are currently at the scene, including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter which has just arrived, says the witness.

EARLIER:

State Highway 2 south of Katikati is closed after a two-car crash this afternoon.

Emergency services are at the scene of the serious crash near Wharawhara Road.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Scott Osmond says two people are trapped in one of the vehicles.

A rescue helicopter has also been called to the scene.

'It is a developing situation and afternoon commuters can expect delays.”

Diversions are possible down Tetley Road and Marshall Road.

Motorists are being warned to expect delays or avoid the scene if possible.
