Police have been put under pressure this morning, with callouts to four separate motor vehicle accidents in the space of an hour.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the first incident involved a car and a bike.

That accident happened at 7.37am on the corner of Cameron Road and Monmouth Street.

'However, no ambulance was required,” he adds.

At 7.58am, a report came in of a car hitting a pedestrian on Otumoetai Road. A St John Ambulance spokesperson confirms a patient was taken to Tauranga Hospital with minor injuries as a result.

Half an hour later, two crashes occurred within quick succession of one another. At 8.26am there was a minor crash on Kereiti Street in Mount Maunganui, while at 8.29am a truck also clipped a car on Hewletts Road.

Fortunately there were no serious injuries, although yesterday afternoon a section of State Highway 30 was closed briefly as emergency services freed a driver trapped in a truck that had gone over a bridge in the eastern Bay of Plenty.

On Monday the highway was also closed due to a two-car crash which resulted in a fatality.

Police are picking on poor motorist

These are the people who complain about police revenue gathering. Truth is police should be giving more traffic infringements. Tauranga has some shocking drivers. If your not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about.

I wish I had 'realist' crystal ball' and rose tinted glasses. Do you really think more tickets equals lower accidents. Get real!

Well it's a better idea than making foreign drivers take a test and there are plenty of dumb Kiwis think that will equal fewer accidents. In all reality tickets are just a tax on the stupid because there is no need to EVER get one. And given that the idiots causing mayhem on the road lack intelligence, pleading with them or trying to demonstrate causal links is way too complicated to fathom so we are left with the simplistic ticket solution. It's how to treat naughty children isn't it? Take away their lollies or toys. The have the mental capacity of children so that's how to treat them. Personally I could think of cheaper and more permanent solutions. What's yours?

Tauranga drivers need to be better.

People should get hit hard with massive fines, lose their vehicle, lose their licences.Tauranga drivers are some of the worst in the country.Arrogant, ignorant, stupidly self involved, very selfish, aggressive & angry, lazy & foolish.Locals should get re-tested every couple of years especially if they keep getting tickets or are involved in causing more than one accident. We expect that people who drive for a profession are regularly checked & appropriately handled ... but let any person drive how they want - for their entire lives.Tough decisions needed not softly softly kiss-ass.
