The splendour of Mount Maunganui at sunset has been captured in a stunning image shot by local photographer Jack Burden.

Here's the math behind Jack's beautiful photo: the time-lapse image which he captured about a fortnight ago consists of 35 individual photos, shot five minutes apart, over a three hour period.

'For this photo I really wanted a perfect exposure from left to right, going darker with each strip, so I'm really stoked with how this one's came out,” explains Jack.

'I've had really good feedback from people on Facebook and Instagram, and it's quite cool watching people who visit my Little Big Markets stall standing there trying to work out what's going on.

'It's definitely a good talking point.”

Jack says he sat on top of Mauao for one-and-a-half hours either side of sunset taking a shot every 10 seconds, then spent a couple of hours afterwards at home piecing the image together.

So what did he do during those three hours when he wasn't staring into his camera?

'I took a book with me, but I pretty much sat there taking it all in. That's the whole photography thing for me, to be able to finish work and get some time to yourself to take it all in and reboot your system so to speak.

'There's definitely worse places to be sitting for three hours, for sure.”
