Bay highway closed after fatal crash

UPDATED 5.23PM: A St John Ambulance spokesperson says one person has died at the scene and paramedics are taking another person with serious injuries to Whakatane Hospital.

Police confirm they and ambulance services are in attendance at a serious crash on State Highway 30, near Angle Road, in Whakatane.

A police spokesperson says the collision between two vehicles happened just before 3.50pm.

One person was reported to be in a critical condition and another in a moderate condition.

The road is closed as the Serious Crash Unit attends and the scene is cleared.

Diversions are in place at McLean Road and Angle Road, and at Luxton Road and State Highway 30.

4.24PM:

State Highway 30 in the Eastern Bay is closed after two cars crashed.

Emergency services are at the scene of the crash, which is on the highway near Angle Road.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says it looked serious when they drove past.

"Someone was performing CPR on one person. Another person looked like they had moderate injuries."

Police have closed down the stretch of highway near Awakeri and diversions have been put in place as follows:

Northbound traffic are to go down SH30, SH2, Western Drain Rd, McLean Rd, Luxton Rd and back on SH30.

Southbound traffic are to do the reverse.

A serious crash is being reported in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Emergency serivces are at the scene of the crash on State Highway 30, near Angle Road, Awakeri.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says two vehicles have crashed head-on.

SunLive understands diversions are being put in place and will update the story as soon as they are available.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the scene or expect delays in their travels.
