Wakeboarding in Papamoa waterways

A wakeboarder has made the most of the flooded waterway opposite Harrison’s Cut in Papamoa. Photos and Video: Bernard Golder.

As they old saying goes, ‘If life gives you lemons, make lemonade'.

So what do you do if life gives you buckets and buckets of rain? Well, you bust out your quadbike and wakeboard and have a little fun, of course.

Video has surfaced on Facebook of a wakeboarder taking full advantage of the recent rain which caused flooding in the waterways in Papamoa today.

However, SunLive has since been contacted by a member of the Tauranga City Council who says the wakeboarder has engaged in a "dangerous act" which is also against council's reserve rules.

"We are always having motor bikes causing a public nuisance and have a devil of a job catching or stopping them."

According to the MetService website, so far 30.6mm of rain has fallen today, with the heaviest period (17.8mm) occurring between 4am-6am.

While Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Papamoa have been peppered by showers today, MetService says there's a chance of heavy rains falling later this afternoon and evening.

Would be great to have a permanent set up, since the regional council is closing ski lanes all over the place.

Can't or won't.

The Council can't even stop cars, motorcycles, motorised scooters and cyclists from passing through the pedestrianised part of Red Square in the city center when the square is in full view of their offices, so why would they care about the waterways?

It's the weekend

Looked like a patrol car went by and wasn't worried the quad rider had no helmet.Flexible rules prevail.

the wakeboarding part is fine. it is the quad bike in the reserve on a wet slope that is the dangerous act. also this rider has no helmet and motor bikes not allowed in council reserves. having fun in the water is ok. there were kids there with boogie boards and kayaks. no problem with that. except the water is stormwater runoff is from roads so is not that clean.

Wait for it..
