City heart project re-starts

Tenders have been called for the demolition of the old council building.

Among the first actions of the council's new Transformation Committee is to set in motion the next stages of the city heart project - actioning the business case studies for the redevelopment of the council precinct.

The council will develop business cases for a new museum, a future proofed city library and develop an indicative business case for an up to 1200 seat multi-purpose performance venue.

The budget is $300,000 for the museum business case, $400,000 for the library and $100,000 for the performance venue. The budgets were decided by the last council.

The library case will also consider whether to keep the existing building.

The locations for the museum and performance venue will be decided by the yet to be formed technical advisory group.

Council has also called for tenders for the demolition of the old council building.

The committee also approved the programme for the community engagement overview during the projects so the public is kept advised of the questions that are being asked and the answers that are given - such as how much is the community prepared to pay.

At is first meeting yesterday, councillor Gail McIntosh asked if priced alternatives will be available for the two possible museum locations of Cliff Road and the council precinct.

We are getting a museum!! $300,000.00 for the Museum 'business case'! What in hell is this?? Money spent to see if it is a viable proposition when any man and his dog will tell them that it isn't!!

OMG its getting near the time to cash in on my property and get out of this City. This Council loves to waste the money from my rates.

Starting how they intend to carry on.

Gail McIntosch refers to the two Museum site options yet she and the Council have NEVER, as in EVER, consulted with the community in regards how best to meet it's museum aspirations, if at all, and where this should take place. Any consultation opportunity has always been confined to the CBD or Cliff Road when many in our community clearly see alternatives that includes enhancing existing opportunities such as the Elms and The Historic Village (that TCC is hell bent on undermining). How can a business case be undertaken when the community has not clearly defined it's preferences? Of concern but not surprised is the statement, 'The locations for the museum and performance venue will be decided by the yet to be formed technical advisory group.' Silly me thought it would be the Elected Members in consultation with the community making these decisions.

"The locations for the museum and performance venue will be decided by the yet to be formed technical advisory group." .. Just a thought, shouldn't the rate payers be having the say first .. it's their money ..
